Shawnee

Shawnee was rounded up in a BLM roundup when she was 5 years old. It is unclear if she as already in foal, or if the person who purchased her at the sale bred her. We suspect she might have already been pregnant. This horse has not been handled much since she was purchased at the sale 4 years ago. She was at a local boarding barn for the first two years we had her, turned out in a pasture with other horses. After a volunteer there spent MANY hours with her out in the pasture, Shawnee did get to where she would take treats and food out of a person's hand.  The volunteer eventually was also able to gain her trust enough to pet her and lead her to the barn with something around her neck. We moved her to a foster home several months ago and she reverted back to not letting anyone touch or catch her.  She still would take treats out of hands though! She has a kind eye, sharp mind, and inquisitive personality. But still very much invested in holding on to her self-preserving Mustang behaviors. She is not as flighty around people as when she first arrived. She has been with a professional trainer for a month now. She is making progress that the trainer says is "slow but sure". He will most likely use the 90 days he has her to get her ground safe, but not started under saddle.  That would be quite a feat in 90 days! She needs an adopter who is highly skilled in working with feral/Mustang horses. She will NOT be adopted out to someone who is interested in training and then selling her or breeding her. Since she has been mostly feral, her feet have not been trimmed or her teeth floated. She has been vaccinated (which was accomplished while she was in a stock trailer). Hopefully she will progress enough in training to allow a hoof trim and dental float.  This mare is so beautiful. And we have already seen pieces of what we think will be a really cute personality.  Shawnee is currently in Tennessee working with a foster parent who has a significant experience with Mustangs.
